Tamrat's research interests lie in the identification of biomarkers to tropical and other infectious diseases with special interests in understanding pathogen-host interaction and immune response in infections with and without HIV co-infection; understanding the dynamics of antigen-specific T cell responses in breast and cervical cancer; and understanding the mechanisms of protection and pathogenesis responsible for cancer.

He is a co-PI in the Ohio State James cancer Center and Addis Ababa University EBV project partnership funded by the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
