Alum and Supporter Spotlight: Thomas Mack

Thomas Mack, DVM, is an Ohio State graduate and distinguished alumnus of the College of Veterinary Medicine. He founded and operated Bayshore Animal Hospital in San Mateo, California for over 35 years. In 1998, he was honored with the Western Region Practitioner of the Year Award by the American Animal Hospital Association.

Dr. Mack is a long-time supporter of charitable organizations and founded his own, Alliance for Smiles, which provides comprehensive treatment for cleft lip and palate anomalies in under-served regions of the world. In addition, Dr. Mack has been an advisor and supporter for the Global One Health initiative (GOHi) since 2016.

His generous contributions to GOHi funded Ohio State students, Balbine Jourdan, College of Veterinary Medicine, as she presented her research on the species takin, a hooved-animal native to the Himalayan mountainous region, at the 2018 Joint AAZV/EAZWV/Leibniz-IZW Conference, and Laura Binkley, College of Veterinary Medicine, to attend the Rabies in the Americas (RITA) conference held in Buenos Aires, Argentina to present her research in molecular epidemiology of rabies in Ethiopia.

Dr. Mack has also been involved with GOHi’s capacity building and rabies prevention efforts in Ethiopia. In his partnership with GOHi, he has:

  • Advised and mentored GOHi students
  • Visited Ethiopia and actively participated in GOHi workshops
  • Participated in the field site visit to the University of Gondar, discussing rabies prevention and control projects
  • Encouraged other alumni to support GOHi and other college initiatives
  • Provided financial support for GOHi projects to sustain capacity building efforts

Dr. Mack serves on the GOHi External Advisory Board.
